“Every kind of organized distraction tends to become progressively more and more imbecile.” —Aldous Huxley
YOU GOTTA FACE some key truths in the new year. A big one is that you must reclaim your life by escaping from the suck of social media and its ongoing ‘enshittification.’
As from Sacred Technicians noted over on Notes:
Ten years ago (if that), social media had a more amiable, benign—“Let’s all connect!”—vibe. It was once a place where you might promote your art, book, needlepoint, garden, or whatever.
Uhm, not anymore.
Just in time for Pluto’s (death) ingress into Aquarius (tech), SM has turned toxic and assumed a morgue-like vibe. Lately, when I visit Facebook or Instagram, the platforms are husks of themselves—crammed with ads and the vampiric demand that you create more, promote more, share more, divulge more—hoping their algorithm will reward you with (maybe) a few more followers or likes.
Well, fuck ‘em.
And that’s the sort of disregard that writer and musician , from The Social Media Escape Club, has tuned into and maximized for his growing community of fugitives—a group you’ll want to join as you step back out into the real world. Seth joined me on the Winter Solstice to offer more insights and tips regarding the gnarly process of freeing yourself from SM.
In this episode of the WOODRUFF cast, Seth and I discuss:
• The current fallout of ‘enshittification’ for creators.
• How artists are forced to brand themselves and self-promote.
• Art’s transformation from music, painting, and writing into the digital sphere.
• Can people truly disengage from social media?
• The importance of having fans.
• Owning your mailing list.
• Getting into making ‘real,’ ‘hardcopy’ things.
• Substack’s controversial new business strategy.
• Pluto’s entry into Aquarius and the death of tech as we know it.
• Are the days gone when folks would hang out and create and hang out?
• Finding the courage to return to the ‘real’ world.
Love,
