I am enthusiastically anticipating the Solstice. The return to longer daylight is my source of energy. As for Christmas trees, my apartment is too small and I don’t really celebrate the holiday. That said, New York City is one giant celebration with lights and trees everywhere. 🙏

I'm sure you've seen homes where the Christmas tree was hung, upside-down, from the ceiling in an "artsy" gesture of defiance to the traditional upright position. This has always bothered me, made me uncomfortable, and alienated me. With your cosmological explanation of the Christmas tree, I now understand why it has so put me off.

Definitely a big no to upside down Christmas trees!

On a funny note I saw a picture the other day on IG, where a household with several cats had placed their tree is a huge box comprised of chainlink fence material. Three cats surrounded the box, starring at the protected tree wistfully — outraged. 😭😻

I switched to a ‘fake Christmas tree’ years ago. I got a new more ‘life like’ (and more $$$) ‘pre-lit’ tree in 2021.

The space in my small home where it ‘lives’ is a corner tucked away in my living room. (The tree is a tall and narrow shaped tree.) Once I put it up I have never taken it down. I ‘decorate’ it in the holiday season and then remove the ornaments, and it sits in the corner. When I watch tv or just hang out in the living room, I turn it on, (regardless of the time of year). The lights cast a lovely glow to the room.

I have always had a Christmas tree, since I was out on my own as a young adult, from a small ‘Charlie Brown’ Christmas tree when I was in my 20’s, to the tree I have now. Not all the boyfriends and ‘significant others’ have jumped on the Christmas tree ‘bandwagon’ but I always have one.

I like the significance of the winter solstice and the Christmas tree that you speak of in this post.

That’ll work Frontera. And why not? You could decorate it to match each seasonal shift. Egg ornaments at Easter, etc.

Yes I’ve thought about that…a ‘seasonal’ tree! 😉💗

I posted this on FB but this is a great read for the holidays (or any days): Jeanette Winterson's NIGHT SIDE OF THE RIVER/GHOST STORIES. I suspect you know Winterson's writing (Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, Sexing the Cherry, The Passion, etc). She has jumped into the ghost story genre with a flourish. The stories range from traditional spooky to AI and metaverse to love to freaky, all wonderfully written. I got it through my local library.

I love it! Christmas tree as a vortex of spiraling galaxies, celebrating everything!
